2008-09 - HDCA 2nd xi Grade Premiers
Robbo's 2nd Grade Premiers
It was a season which saw David Roberts' 2nd XI continually defend poor scores and win games of cricket - and so it was in the Grand Final versus Greensborough at Warringal Park in 2009.

Heidelberg 6/304 (cc) def Banyule 10/179 (off 68)
(C Hunter 93, S Cashen 50 n.o. / B Grindal 5/36, D Noonan 3/25 )
On Saturday March 31st 2007, the Heidelberg Cricket Club defeated Banyule Cricket Club to claim the HDCA 1st Grade premiership at Chelsworth Park, Ivanhoe.
The HDCA E.C. Jack Shield has returned to its rightful home at Warringal Park, Heidelberg.
Resuming its innings at 5/227 (Hunter 93, Jordan 45, Grindal 28n.o.), Heidelberg's middle order made steady progress against tight & disciplined bowling from Banyule. Stephen Cashen controlled the game's tempo, gradually increasing the run rate culminating in 30 odd runs from the final 3 overs of the innings. The little maestro once again finished undefeated - his 50n.o. pushing Heidelberg's total to 6/304 cc.
In reply, the Banyule openers flew to 42 before Grindal was rewarded for some tight swing bowling, trapping the Banyule captain in front LBW. He repeated the dose 2 runs later, removing the dangerous Jeff Wilson for 1. Left arm quick Damien Noonan was swung into the attack after 28 overs and immediately looked threatening. His unyielding line and occasional bounce produced a much needed break through at 93 when he found the edge of Phillips' bat, caught behind by Branagan - 3/93.
Captain Jordan decided to turn up the heat on Banyule's middle order by throwing the ball back to Grindal and asking him for a big second spell after only a short rest. Together, Grindal and Noonan produced a wonderful 20 overs of swing bowling, their partnership ripping the heart out of Banyule's middle order by taking an unbelievable 5 wickets for 5 runs in a dozen overs. Game Over.
The Banyule tail merely delayed the inevitable. Eventually, Heidelberg captured the necessary 2 wickets to claim the premiership by dismissing Banule for 179.
Damien Noonan finished with 3/25 from 16 unchanged overs whilst Grindal added 5/36 from 22 overs to his rich month of form (103 and 4 wickets in the Semi final, 41 with the bat in this game). Mark Favrin, Tim Branagan, and Craig Hunter all took wonderful catches to support the bowlers.
Grindal's heroics earnt him the Greg Anderson medal for best player in the GF (to add to his BOG in the winning One Day GF in February against the same opposition).
As captain Jordan said at the post match presentation, this was a wonderful effort from his Heidelberg charges given that injuries and unavailabilities meant that some 28 players represented the 1st XI during the year. ALL of these players created a memorable 150th year for the HCC, a year which saw last year's heartbreak turn to this year's jubilation.
